At Lawrence School, we believe that education should be about celebrating individual strengths and learning styles.
Students with learning disabilities are unique learners. While their sight, hearing, and other senses are intact, and intelligence levels are often average or above average, they often have difficulty processing the information they receive, which leads to broken, scattered or jumbled messages.
Living with a learning disability presents a mixture of both challenges and blessings. An unusually high sensitivity to stimuli can result in both distractibility and heightened creativity. And while LD students often seem to lag behind their peers in maturity, they may also exhibit natural leadership and unique problem-solving skills.
In order to produce successful results, traditional academic settings often rely on an assumed level of standardization from their student body. Because students with learning disabilities inherently learn “outside the box”, they are often misunderstood. These students have the ability to learn as well as anyone else; they simply learn differently.
Today, thousands of our children — born with the intelligence and talent to build great bridges, create new art, triumph in the business world and contribute greatly to our society — are struggling both academically and emotionally. But given the opportunity to learn and grow in a unique environment, these students are able to unlock their potential and succeed.
At Lawrence School, we understand the unique learning needs of students with learning disabilities and attention deficits, and our specialized programs and methods are designed to help these students reach their full potential.
In our small
classes, students receive the individualized attention they need to become both successful and confident learners. Each student's learning strengths and challenges are assessed and continually reviewed throughout the year, and individualized learning plans ensure that no student is placed above or below his/her ability level. On the High School level, students also benefit from Advanced Placement courses as well as our exemplary college placement services program.
But learning at Lawrence doesn't just happen in the classroom. We offer a full complement of athletic and
extracurricular activities from theater and yearbook to basketball and baseball, and students in our Upper
School program visit exciting locations like Boston, Washington, DC and Toronto. And on all grade levels, students are given tools and opportunities to blossom socially, which enhances both interpersonal skills and self-esteem.
If it is time for you and your student to discover success both inside and outside the classroom, consider learning at Lawrence. |
