Financial Aid

Learning differences do not discriminate based on race, religion, gender, or socioeconomic status. The National Institutes of Health estimate that children with learning disabilities comprise 10-15% of school age population. In Cuyahoga, Summit, and the seven surrounding counties served by Lawrence School, that affects between 81,576 and 121,886 children – most of whom have little choice but to rely on the free public school system to meet their learning needs.

The typical family profile at Lawrence School is unlike that of most other private or parochial schools. We understand that many of our families never imagined their child would require an independent school education, and therefore require financial assistance to even consider this option. While we do not offer 100% full-ride scholarships through our internal financial aid process, we do offer assistance to the majority of families that apply.

According to the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), in 2009-10 the average percentage of students who attend a NAIS school and receive financial assistance is 19.7% nationally and 23.8% in Ohio. Lawrence School provided a total of 31% of students with financial assistance for the current school year.

Primarily, we use the FACTS Tuition Management and Grant & Aid Assessment program to make initial recommendations regarding need-based tuition assistance. An internal Financial Aid committee then makes the final decisions based on FACTS reports, budget, and other common practice evaluations. The student must be accepted at Lawrence School prior to a financial aid decision being made. Decisions regarding the size of the award may be appealed by writing a letter to the Financial Aid Committee.

The ability for students to receive the individualized education they need should not be predicated on their parents’ financial ability to pay a full tuition. Financial support is essential to helping us continue to work towards the vision of Lawrence School, that one day all students who learn differently will have the opportunity, encouragement and resources to fulfill their potential and benefit society.

* Because Lawrence School has a rolling admissions policy, applications for financial aid are accepted on an ongoing basis. However, because the majority of awards are given in advance of each new school year, the optimal time to submit your application is between March – May.
