Teachers at Lawrence understand the unique needs of bright students with
learning and attention differences. Our curriculum and teaching techniques take full advantage of the
cumulative power of sight, hearing, touch and body movement as aids to learning. Our safe,
supportive environment fosters a positive school experience for students: academic growth is tangible;
social confidence increases; and self-esteem builds as students recognize their true potential.
The academic structure focuses on the English language and mathematics skills as well as science and
social studies. The school features a well-equipped computer lab, state-of-the-art science lab, library,
gymnasium, music lab and art studio.
Four teaching components specifically designed to help students with learning disabilities are used
at Lawrence:
Attention and Concentration
Distractibility is a hallmark of students with learning disabilities. Our teachers continually shape and
maintain an optimum level of attention during instruction.
Structure and Organization
Students with learning disabilities and attention deficits have an inconsistent ability to organize personal
space, materials and information. Our teachers introduce learning strategies to help students organize, learn
and remember information.
Multi-sensory Teaching
A multi-sensory approach to learning is recognized as a critical tool for teaching the student with learning
disabilities. Material is presented in a visual, tactile, auditory and kinesthetic format, making it easier
for a student to both process and retain information.
Teaching to Mastery
All Lawrence curricula is committed to memory through a highly structured approach allowing each phase of
learning to be mastered. The mastered material then serves as a foundation for future learning.
Many children with learning disabilities or attention deficits struggle socially. Lawrence places a high
priority on teaching social and communication skills to all students within a respectful and responsible
environment. This includes direct instruction to help them better understand, accept, compensate and share with
others about their own strengths and difficulties. Students have multiple opportunities to collaborate on
activities and develop solid leadership skills. By reinforcing these character-building experiences, students
develop confidence, having recognized their potential for success.
At Lawrence, we value our partnership with the family. Progress is carefully monitored and parents are frequently
informed about student growth. Teacher to parent communication is consistent. Our nurturing atmosphere has an
impact on our students as well as our families. By helping children understand their learning difference we
empower them to realize their full potential. |
