Head Notes
In this column on September 1, I outlined four core areas that the management team and I have identified as critical to the continued health of Lawrence School. Since then, I have addressed two of those areas – building enrollment and supporting the Capital Campaign. This week, I would like to discuss the third core area, strengthening the internal structure and functions of the school.

When organizations such as ours decide to expand services or build new facilities, the most common mistake they may face is neglecting to create and nurture the infrastructure prior to the actual physical expansion. Thankfully, with the support of the Board of Trustees, the internal planning for our external growth has been going on for several years.

For example, we have streamlined our management structure to reduce the number of employees who report to me, allowing more support and supervision for each staff member.  Our new Office of External Affairs coordinates the communication, fund raising, and special events activities into a more effective whole. The addition of an experienced Chief Financial Officer allows us to oversee the building project, as well as the maintenance of two campuses and the critically important expansion of our information technology services.

As January approaches, we are working to assure a smooth transition.  We are trying to anticipate where every paper clip – as well as every piece of furniture – will need to be in both buildings so the transition is seamless for our students and parents.   In January, you will be able to grade the effectiveness of our internal and external preparations, and we are working very, very hard to pass your test!
