This week at Lawrence School
Lawrence Loop August 25, 2006
New Building
Front entrance of new Lawrence Upper School

A representative from Jostens will be here next Tuesday, Aug. 29 to talk to seniors about class rings & graduation announcements.

When writing checks to the school, it is very helpful when you put a note on the memo line stating what the check is for. This helps ensure the proper crediting of your school account. A big "thank you" to those who are already in the habit of doing this!

Upper School extracurricular registrations are due today to Mrs. Pedaline. Please do not forget to attach payment as we are unable to register a child until payment has been received.

Additions to the extracurricular program this year include Academic Challenge, Fast pitch Fundamentals (girls), Flag Football, Literature & Art Magazine and Outdoor Club.
Middle School student
Welcome to Middle School, Lesley!
Do you know a family who might benefit from hearing more about Lawrence? Tell them about one of these upcoming Open House events for prospective students: Nov. 5 at 3 pm for Upper School, or Nov. 8 at 9 am for Lower School. The Upper School event will be held at the new Sagamore Hills campus! Please RSVP to the Admission office at 440-526-0717.
High School students
It's a great year to be a Lawrence high school student!
If you visit the Art Room this year, you will notice a colorful new floor, painted this summer by local artist Lynda Britton. The new floor comes to us thanks to a generous donation from our Annual Benefit Auction last April.

Parents are asked to be mindful of students with peanut allergies when providing snacks that will be shared. We do have several students with peanut allergies this year, and ask you to please check with your child's teachers before providing food for celebrations, etc.

Welcome to the new school year!

Welcome, new staff

Please help us welcome these new staff members to Lawrence: Mrs. Alicia Gottesman in the newly-created position of Lower School Dean of Students; Mr. Jason Deal, Mrs. Joyce Freeman and Mrs. Judy Kaufmann to the Upper School teaching staff; and Ms. Holly Geraci and Ms. Lakeshia Richardson to the Lower School teaching staff. They all look forward to getting to know you and your children.

Notes on Dismissal

As you have likely noticed, dismissal has been a bit of a challenge this first week. To reduce frustration for you, and eliminate concerns expressed by the city, we ask your cooperation on these points: Dismissal time is 2:45 for Upper School, and 3:00 for Lower School. Please try not to arrive earlier than your scheduled time. Only those cars with multiple riders (carpools) will be permitted in the back parking lot. Finally, parents are discouraged from parking and waiting on Overlook Rd., at the request of Broadview Heights City Council. Thank you!

www.lawrencevip.org

Parents are reminded to visit www.lawrencevip.org to view helpful information provided by other Lawrence parents and staff members. This is the place to sell or purchase gently worn uniform items, arrange carpools, talk about sports, download forms, and interact with other parents. Thanks again to parent Hedy Laverdiere for her wonderful ideas, and for volunteering her time and talent to this project.

Night at the Races

Don't miss Night at the Races - the annual fundraising event for the Athletic Boosters Club - on Sat. Sept. 9. Doors open at 6:30 pm and racing begins at 7:30 pm. $25 per person includes dinner and beverages. Plus, the OSU vs. Texas game will be broadcast live, so you won't miss a thing! For questions or reservation forms, contact Ron Messer at x2410.

Upper School Curriculum Nights

Parents are are encouraged to attend one of these Curriculum Nights: Mon. Aug. 28 for grades 7-8, or Tues. Aug. 29 for grades 9-12. Both evening start promptly at 7 pm. This is a great opportunity to meet your child's teachers, walk through his/her schedule, learn about homework expectations and ask questions/clarify policies. Also, visit our Market Day display, and show your school spirit by purchasing a LS sweatshirt from the National Honor Society!

Raising Healthy Children

All parents are invited to join us on Wed. Sept. 13 from 1-2 pm for a video conference sponsored by ISACS (Independent Schools Association of the Central States). The presenter, Robert Evans, is a well-respected psychologist and consultant in education and will be speaking on "Raising Healthy Children in Challenging Times". Please RSVP to Mrs. Diffenbacher at x1113.

Lower School Curriculum Night

Lower School parents are encouraged to join us for Curriculum Night on Thurs. Sept. 21 at 7 pm. This is your opportunity to meet your child's teachers and learn more about the curriculum being offered this year. Plus, find out about Market Day and the VIP (Very Involved Parent) Association.

Classroll - Upper School

Upper School parents will receive user IDs for Classroll early next week via US mail. Classroll allows you to view your child's schedule and receive grades and comments from his/her teachers. This year, you will notice a section called "Record Management". This is where we keep track of student forms. Please click on this section to see if your child still has any forms outstanding and if so, please return those to the school as soon as possible.
Head Notes
Welcome back! The school year has opened with high spirits and lots of students in this cramped building.  This is the beginning of the year which will truly be the most exciting in the school's history. In January, we will open our Upper School campus and the Lower School will finally have the room they need after sharing increasingly crowded conditions for the last several years. Because the new campus is ahead of schedule, we expect that Upper School students will report to the Sagamore Hills campus after the break. You will receive a survey about your transportation needs very soon and I hope you will respond promptly so we can make sure every family is able to make a smooth transition.

As your child thrives at Lawrence, please take advantage of the opportunity to get to know both our talented staff and your fellow parents. Because students come from a 10-county area, it can be hard to feel connected. We offer a number of opportunities for parents to come together in social and supportive settings and hope you will take advantage of all of them!

My hope for this school year, as I told the staff last week, is for this to be the time when dreams come true - for our students, for the school, for the staff, and for you.  I look forward to sharing all the excitement and joy of the coming year with you all!
