College Guidance: Preparing Students for Success

Ski Club Update

Ski Club will take place on both Wednesday and Thursday of next week (2/28 and 3/1). This will ensure that students receive their five days of skiing before the weather gets too warm. Thursday, 3/1 will mark the last day of ski club for the season. For questions, contact Mrs. Perillo at the Lower School (x1415) or Mrs. Hotz for Upper School (x2408).

Lower School Basketball Club

Due to the scheduling conflict with ski club, Lower School basketball club is postponed for one week. Also, please note that the days for some grades have changed to better accommodate participants. Students in grades 1-4 will meet on Wednesdays (3/7, 3/14, 3/21 and 3/28) from 3:15-4:30. Students in grades 5-6 will meet Thursdays (3/8, 3/15, 3/22 and 3/29) from 3:15-4:30. Call Mr. Redd with questions at x1422.

Benefit Auction Update

All Lawrence parents are invited to join us for lunch on Tuesday, 3/6 at the Upper School. Lunch will be served at 12:30, followed by an auction planning meeting. Come get to know other Lawrence parents and find out more about "The First Bell" Benefit Auction taking place on May 5 at the Upper School.

Also, we are still accepting auction items. You may drop them off at the Upper or Lower school. If you need donation forms contact Jayne Eiben at x3107. Help your child earn a free dress down day by contributing to the class theme baskets! Contact parents Jan Bell (Upper School) or Jody Klejka (Lower School) with questions. Thank you for your support making this year’s Benefit a huge success!

10th Grade Fundraiser

The Class of 2009 is raising class funds by selling candy through the Malley's Chocolates online fundraiser. If you know a member of the Class of 2009, please order directly through that student.  You may also click here or (if you are reading the paper version) contact Tracy Pedaline at x2124 for the web address. Orders over $65 receive free shipping, and you can ship as a gift to anywhere in the US!

Team Lawrence Update

We are up to 40 "Team Lawrence" participants in the May 20 "Cleveland Marathon, Half Marathon & 10k" to benefit Lawrence School athletic programs. Visit our event website to see a list of who is participating: www.active.com/donate/lawrenceschool. And please make a donation to support our runners and walkers who have been training in all this snow and cold weather! Proceeds will go towards starting a cross country team at the Upper School as well as Lower School athletics and extracurriculars.

Lower School Book Fair

The Lower School Scholastic Book Fair will take place from Monday, 3/12 to Friday, 3/16. If you are able to volunteer to help with this event, please contact Karen McKeon at x1401.

Lower School Parent Coffee

Join us for Lower School Parent Coffee on Thursday, 3/8 from 8–9:30 am.  Jeff Petrulis will discuss the Upper School Program along with College Guidance.  While this topic will be beneficial to all of our Lower School parents, we particularly encourage all of our 6th grade parents to attend.
Head Notes - Guest Columnist
We are currently meeting with Juniors and their families to discuss post-secondary options, and provide students with preparation for the SAT and ACT tests. Some Lawrence students are eligible to receive accommodations on these tests, which can include: extended time, a scribe, use of a computer, a reader, extra or extended breaks. Providing accommodations to students who need them helps level the playing field and allows every student to achieve to their individual potential, regardless of learning differences.

We are also working with sophomores who are interested in specific vocational programming. Vocational programming is an excellent resource for students who may not want to attend a four-year school, but are interested in gaining valuable skills now that will serve their intended profession after high school.

Additionally, we are preparing to administer AP exams in May for those students taking AP Physics and AP US History. This is a great chance for students to challenge themselves academically while possibly earning college credit.

Finally, we were honored to help students celebrate academic achievement with the Middle School Honors Breakfast and High School Honors Luncheon, and continue to support our seniors as they receive their college acceptance letters and work on their senior projects.

We are so pleased to see the positive impact our college and post-secondary guidance program has had on students so far, and we look forward to watching our students continue to excel as they leave Lawrence and pursue their chosen careers.
