Outdoor dress code reminder - Lower School

Lower School parents are reminded to make sure children are dressed for the weather. Spring can still bring cool temperatures, and students who are not properly dressed have to sit in the main office and are not able to participate in activity. Please check your family handbook for guidelines.

"Computer Friendly" Homework

Lower School parents may notice a new "computer stamp" on their children's' assignment notebooks. These stamps indicate homework assignments that are computer friendly, indicating that the assignment can be completed on home computers.

Head Notes
This week we experienced our first 'lockdown drill' at the Upper School. Lower School will have the same drill next week. What is this all about? Just this year, the Ohio legislature passed a bill requiring every Ohio school to create disaster recovery plans, and practice lockdown procedures annually in concert with local law enforcement officers. Student safety is both our number one concern and increasingly complex to plan for. With the help of statewide resources, we have developed plans which can protect our students in a variety of situations.

If we had to dismiss early (for example, a power outage or loss of heat), lockdown within the school (for example, an intruder in the building), or evacuate the school (for example, a gas leak on the premises), we have established protocols to assure that students are protected and accounted for at all times.  Unfortunately, we live in a society where it is not okay to hope for the best – we must prepare.  So, although I personally hate to subject our students to these drills and risk frightening them, we have no alternative.  If we ever face a true emergency, we must be ready to respond effectively.

On a positive note, I am so proud of the mature manner in which our Upper School students responded to this week's drill. They understood why this matters and, although forced to maintain uncomfortable silence for 25 minutes, they were remarkable.  The police gave us an A+ for our response! We hope that we will never put any of these plans into real action, but we must be prepared.  So, in addition to fire and tornado drills to which we are all accustomed, we will be adding lockdown drills.  This is no fun for anyone, but it is part of meeting our most important obligation – to assure the safety of each student we serve.
