Elective Course Offerings 2012-13Flex Credit PolicyIn establishing the Ohio Core Curriculum in 2006, the Ohio General Assembly directed the State Board of Education to develop a statewide plan for implementing methods for students to earn units of high school credit based on the demonstration of subject area competency. The attached document explains these guidelines and provides specific details on the various ways students can earn course credit at Lawrence School: Flex Credit Policy
Scheduling ProcessAll students were given a grade specific schedule request form during advisory class and attended a scheduling assembly outlining the policies and procedures as well as the elective course options. These schedule request forms can be found here: 9th Grade10th Grade11th Grade12th GradeStudents, with the help of their teachers, parents and learning coach, are to fill out the request form and obtain the appropriate signatures. Please note that Elective classes only need signatures if the requirement states "Department Approval." All core classes (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and World Languages) need signatures.
Once the form is complete and the teachers’ signatures have been obtained, parents are to sign off on the request and students are to enter their requests into the online form which can be found as a link in the students' Google Docs.
Students are to return the paper form to Mrs. Cook and submit the online form by Friday April 27, 2012.
It will take approximately one month to process the requests and create class schedules. Schedules will be created starting with 12th grade and working down. Schedules will be distributed to students once all schedules, 9-12, have been created.

Incoming 9th Graders The scheduling process for 9th graders is very straightforward as these students do not have many choices in their schedule. Core courses (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies) as well as mandatory 9th grade classes (Advisory, Learning Strategies, Health, and PE) make up all but one class period for 9th grade students. Most 9th grade students chose to fill that class period with either a World Language, Intervention and Enrichment, or Student Assistance; however there are elective course options for 9th grade students who wish to participate. |
|
Incoming 10th graders Students will have more freedom in choosing their schedule this year as there are not as many required classes for 10th graders. Since this is their first time with multiple choices, they may need some guidance from home about what elective classes to request. This is the year that we recommend all students consider requesting a World Language. |
|
Incoming 11th graders This is the year that students should really start requesting elective options in areas they may chose to explore after high school. Students again will need some guidance from home in selecting the appropriate elective classes to request. This is traditionally a difficult academic school year and the year that most students learn to advocate for themselves. Teachers at Lawrence School tend to ‘raise the academic bar’ this school year in hopes to begin preparing students for life after high school. |

Incoming 12th graders During 12th grade, students have a lot of freedom in creating a schedule that best fits their needs and their interests. Currently, the only mandatory classes that 12th graders will take are English 12, Learning Strategies II - Preparing for Transitions, and Advisory 12; however we STRONGLY RECOMMEND that all 12th graders take at least one Math, one Science, and one Social Studies class or elective during this year. 12th graders will have first priority on all elective classes during the scheduling process; however, they may still be ‘shut out’ of electives if those classes overlap with a core class. |
