Happy Retirement, Sue Speer!
Happy Retirement, Sue Speer!

After six dedicated years of service, our school accountant, Sue Speer, will be retiring on January 15. Sue joined the Lawrence community just months before the pandemic, and we are incredibly grateful for the vital role she played in helping our school navigate those complex financial challenges.

While Sue worked diligently behind the scenes, her heart was always centered on our mission. We sat down with her to reflect on her time at Lawrence and what she’s looking forward to next.

Q: What was the most rewarding part of your job?

Sue: Witnessing the positive change that Lawrence makes for each child and family. Seeing kids gain confidence and self-esteem because they are now in an environment with the right tools and community of teachers and staff to help them learn. I am humbled when speaking with parents who are in tears of joy because their child is now excited to go to school and learn.

Q: What will you miss most about Lawrence?

Sue: I will miss so many things, but especially the friendships I’ve made. The Lawrence community is an incredible group of people who truly care about the kids and the mission of the school.

Q: Looking back at your years here, what accomplishment are you most proud of?

Sue: It’s difficult to state the one thing I'm most proud of during my time at Lawrence. I started here just months before COVID hit, which created numerous challenges for all of us. I’m proud of the role I played in compiling the data and analysis needed to secure the grants and funding that helped Lawrence School navigate those uncertain times.

Q: What are your plans for your first Monday of retirement?

Sue: I plan to relax in the morning with coffee and a book! Then, I will start packing for my trip to St. Croix later in the week.

Q: Do you have any other immediate travel plans or hobbies you've been waiting to dive into?

Sue: I have a 'watercolor' retreat in Scotland planned for August. I’m also excited to start painting, knitting, hiking, biking, kayaking, and of course, spending more time with family and friends.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to add as you celebrate your retirement?

Sue: I want to thank my colleagues for this incredible journey. I am so thankful for the friendships and opportunities. I wish you all the very best!
