One of the most rewarding parts of Dr. Kelly Christian’s job is the opportunity to provide hope to families. It’s been that way for the last 10 years, when Dr. Christian joined Lawrence School’s Ethan D. Schafer Center for Learning Differences as a postdoctoral fellow.
Since its founding in 2006, the Schafer Center has been a trusted source of support for parents and professionals alike seeking guidance for students with learning differences.
Learning differences are common. In fact, data from the National Center for Learning Disabilities indicates that one in five children struggle with learning or attention challenges. From dyslexia and dyscalculia to ADHD and more, these challenges can impact a student's academic performance and overall well-being. The licensed and knowledgeable staff at the Schafer Center are equipped to identify and address these learning differences.
“It’s wonderful to see the relief wash over a parent when we talk about their concerns and come up with a clear plan to help their child,” said Dr. Christian, who now serves as the center’s clinical director. “I listen to their concerns, encourage questions, and ensure they know our door is always open for further support.
“We start by helping families understand their child’s strengths and weaknesses, offering resources and guidance for next steps. Our goal is to educate families and provide them with the information they need to make informed decisions. We always strive to meet families where they are.”
The Schafer Center offers a range of services to help, whether you’re the parent of a preschooler beginning to learn the alphabet, a school-age child struggling in the classroom, or a teen with executive function challenges. These include testing, consultations, referrals, and academic support.
This comprehensive support wouldn’t be possible without a dedicated team. Renee Voth, the Schafer Center’s administrative coordinator, plays a vital role in welcoming families.
“I love being the first point of contact at Lawrence for families that reach out to the Schafer Center,” Voth said. “I strive to make them feel comfortable and at ease, knowing they’ve found a place that will help answer their questions.”

As Vanessa Diffenbacher, the center’s administrative director, notes, “Kelly and her team have created a stellar reputation in the community as a place where parents can get answers about their child’s needs.”
The Schafer Center provides a vital resource for families in the region, offering comprehensive support, expert guidance, and a compassionate team committed to empowering children with learning differences to reach their full potential.
